Make consistent and accurate metal parts
One of the most common and versatile manufacturing techniques, metal stamping is a cold forming process in which raw materials are pressed into a mold to change its shape. Stamping enables manufacturers to quickly handle large volume runs, producing consistent and accurate metal parts at minimal cost.
Tool & Die are the key to the success of any stamping project. In particular, the stamping die itself must be designed to produce precise results and must be well made to prevent premature wear. The starting point and foundation for high-precision mass production is always a perfectly designed, precisely manufactured, long-lasting stamping and/or injection molding tool. Precision, repeatability and cost effectiveness are the key focus of everything we build.
Tool & Die are a key component of the metal stamping process, and their design and manufacture are critical to ensuring the success of any stamping project. At Top Metal Stamping, we are committed to providing our customers with the best solution, whether you need a simple stamping die or a complex multi-stage die, we can meet their unique die needs.
What Is A Stamping Die?
In metal stamping, a punch presses a metal sheet into a die with a corresponding concave shape. The press applies enough pressure until the metal is forced to conform to the shape of the mold without heating. Depending on the application, the die can be designed to form or cut metal, or to do both at the same time.
Stamping dies vary greatly in size and geometry, as they can be used for projects ranging from microelectronics to aerospace components. There are also subtypes for dies of specific stamping types.
1. Classification based on process properties:
(1) A stamping die for separating the material along a closed or open contour line. Such as blanking mold, punching mold, etc.
(2) The bending die deforms the plate along a straight line (bending curve), so as to obtain a mold with a certain Angle and the shape of the workpiece.
(3) The drawing die is a die that breaks the plate into an open hollow part, or further changes the shape and size of the hollow part.
(4) The forming die is a die that directly copies the blank or semi-finished workpiece into the shape of a punch or a die, and the material itself only produces local plastic deformation. Such as flanging mold, forming mold, etc.
(5) riveting die refers to the use of external forces to connect or overlap the participating parts in a certain order and manner, thus forming a whole.
2. Classification based on the degree of process combination:
(1) A stamping die for separating the material along a closed or open profile. Such as blanking die, punching die, etc.
(2) The bending die deforms the plate along a straight line (bending curve), so as to obtain a mold with a certain Angle and the shape of the workpiece.
(3) The drawing die is a die that pulls the plate into an open hollow part, or further changes the shape and size of the hollow part.
(4) The forming die is the blank or semi-finished workpiece directly copied into the punch or mold shape of the mold, the material itself only produces local plastic deformation. Such as flanging mold, forming mold, etc.
(5) riveting die refers to the use of external forces to connect or overlap the participating parts in a certain order and manner, thus forming a whole.
What Is the Structure of the Metal Stamping Die?
Generally can be divided into upper die and lower die. The upper die is composed of die handle (punch), guide sleeve, punch, bottom plate, fixing plate, screw, pin, upper die seat (upper support), off template, etc. The lower die is generally composed of a lower die base, a guide plate (side guide plate), a concave die, a baffle plate, a bearing plate, a guide post, screws, pins, etc.

Materials
The Importance of Material Selection in Your Tool & Die Design
Because stamping dies require a certain degree of hardness, toughness, and durability, their structural materials often exhibit exceptional longevity between sharpening and exhibit characteristics conducive to the formation of complex designs. There are a variety of materials with properties that meet these requirements and are used to produce high-quality, reliable stamping dies, including: Choosing the right steel grade is critical in mold design. Achieving the appropriate steel hardness is essential to balance wear resistance and toughness, preventing premature wear of die components.
We prioritize high-quality steel grades like SKD11, D2, and CR12 for extended tool life and low maintenance requirements. These hardened materials are ideal for high-volume production and complex parts.
